After the last couple of articles about the switch to the N95 8GB, i have had a few questions about some basic how-to’s and integration from everyday Mac users like you and me. So here is a rundown of what you should know when taking the plunge.
Most of the BEST applications like Twibble (Twitter Client), Slick (AIM), WEB, will use a great deal of data. Your best bet is to just get an unlimited Internet plan with your mobile provider to stay connected and in touch. To avoid any data transfer simply use Wifi on the N95
So you got your new N95 and you are Mac user.. Here is where you start.
iSync
Get the iSync Plug-in here or just google it. Download and install on your Mac. This will enable wired or wireless transfer of all of your data swiftly and efficiently including, Contacts, Calendar, and Bookmarks. I was able to Sync all of this information in about 1 minute via Bluetooth.
Nokia Multimedia Transfer
Get Nokia Multimedia Transfer here, or google it. From here you are going to want to Sync up yo
u iTunes library, and add Media (movies, photos, etc.) After you Download and install Nokia Media Transfer on your Mac, you will go through a quick set up and be able to sync up via USB cable or Bluetooth. The only gripe I have about this process is the actual transfers take FOREVER. But works flawless either way. Here is what you can do:
iTunes and iPhoto
In each of these Applications, there will be a folder called “N95″ or “Nokia N95″ added to
your Library (for iPhoto) and to your Playlists (in iTunes). You simply Drag and Drop whatever content you’d like into these folders from these applications, and Sync.
Device Browser
From this option in Multimedia Transfer you can browse all of the files on your phone to add and delete applications and things of that sort. To ADD applications, you can do this 2 ways:
-Nokia S60 applications are in the form of .sis or .sisx install files. Either download the application install file (.sis, .sisx) to your desktop, drag it to your folder of choice to your N95, after the transfer is complete go to Tools>File Manager from your phone and go to wherever you placed that file. Click that file and the phone will guide you through the installation process. The second option is to go to the site from your phone browser and click the install file. It will download and install right on your phone. Very easy.
When dropping videos into your N95 use MASS MEMORY.
*Installing unsigned applications to your phone*
Sometimes you will run into an application that will deny installation (i.e. RotateMe). There is a simple patch that you can put on your N95 to allow install of ANY application. Just make sure whatever you are installing is trust worthy.
- First download this hack file, here.
- Download and install Y-Browser, here
- Drag the “Hack” folder into your MASS MEMORY root folder (with Nokia Multimedia Transfer on your Mac)
- On your phone open Y-Browser and click E:
- Choose the “Hacks” folder you just placed in there and click and install “HelloCarbide”
- After that is done installing click Back to the main Y-Browser menu, then the Applications shortcut key to get out of Y-Browser. Its important to do it this way to keep Y-Browser running.
- Go to “applications” and choose HelloCarbide from the menu. Click Options then Menu 1 and choose Yes.
- Once that is done, go back to Y-Browser and highlight Installserver.exe then choose Options>Edit>Copy.
- Click Back in Y-Browser and choose C:>SYS>BIN then click Options>Edit>Paste and choose
Yes.
- Now you can Exit Y-Browser, restart your phone, and you will be able to now install Unsigned apps.
*You can delete ANY .sis/.sisx install file after you have installed the app on your phone*
The process seems long but it took me about 5 minutes so don’t sweat it. Good Luck
